Case Of The Mondays Cure – Firelight

There are things that you sometimes need to selectively choose the gems out of and appreciate for what they are. Such as it is with Saturday Night Live. Their set of celebrity-included comedy bits and trademark mainstays has been in competition with other humorous efforts, but they still manage to crank out some consistent laughs in very specific places.

One is in the area of popular culture, so if you’re struggling to get started on your work or school week, well – it could be worse. You could be an adolescent going through their “awkward” period in a complicated world of vampires and werewolves.

Or you could be going through it with this:

Case Of The Mondays Cure – Late Halloween Kitty Fun

On a site-related note, the new webhost should be up, running, and hosting Overly Positive. I wanted to make sure we had full propagation around the ‘Net before I posted again, which explains the lack of posting yesterday. Oops!

Anyway, Monday is here, fond memories of Halloween costume parties are still fresh, but the work week beckons with the usual stressful, dull aura it has. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t have a little fun relating some silly Halloween stories, either. Take, for example, this little piece a friend sent me that an intrepid cat owner put together for Halloween. As a cat owner, I have to say it must have taken some time to get this right.

Happy Monday, everyone! Hope that picked you up for the week.

Case of the Mondays Cure – Best Costume Ever

I’m playing around with certain regular features on Overly Positive, and Case of the Mondays Cure is one of them. While it’s nice to have a few links to interesting geekery to start your Monday morning, I think I find that multimedia might be more effective for cheering you up at the beginning of your week.

So without further ado, here is the best Halloween costume ever, for all my fellow geeks out there. It gets good about 3/4ths of the way in.

Case Of The Mondays Cure – CCTV, Hotties, and Millionaire MUDs

So_Sad_CatAnother Monday, and another set of links about great stories about geekdom. It’s October now, and at least in my region of the world, Fall is in full swing, meaning that a dreary, cold, and depressing morning is common. But that’s where we come in. Here’s some stuff going on around the ‘Net:

New Internet Web-Based Game Has Real Consequences (via GamePolitics): So those folks across the pond in the UK are going to have something to do with the 4 million+ CCTV cameras posted in the country soon. Seems that “Internet Eyes” is designed to utilize the cameras for players to click buttons to report crimes occurring in the country. Clicking the button means a still of the shot is sent to an operator, who will decide what to do next. Watch out, Farmville – this one might give you a run for your money!

Bayonetta Is Hotter Than Your Girlfriend (via Destructoid): I’ve always enjoyed the blatantly irascible writing style of Jim Sterling of Destructoid, but this one is particularly great to read. Upcoming high-octane action and fanservice fest Bayonetta is an anticipated title, and Jim tells you why Bayonetta is the hottest thing since Lara Croft got pixellated.

Text-Based Games Still Got Earning Power (via The Escapist): Some of you may be too young to remember MUDs and what they meant to online gaming, but text-based adventures were a nice little staple of many folks with time to kill back in college. These days, MUDs are a bit forgotten, but apparently, a young 21-year old English developer has earned the equivalent of over a million dollars with his creation, Torn, by allowing interested users to purchase extras for a nominal fee. Break out the Zork, folks – you could be next.

Links, Reviews, Roundups (via Spinksville): It’s probably a good idea to, you know, give some love back to the folks who like to hopefully read this blog for a bit of sunshine. Spinks has a great link roundup that covers a variety of subjects of interest, from Champions Online, to Aion, to MMO design in general. Be sure to check it!

And that’s that for this Monday. Now go off and go do what you do best!

Case of the Mondays Cure – Dueling Guitars,Tagged 360′s, and Real Guns

Sad Puppy Dog Eyes
Image by Martin Cathrae via Flickr

What’s that? The leaves are falling off the trees? You can’t go out in your bright pink speedo and draw funny looks from the way your junk is displayed? Never fear, Case of the Mondays Cure is here with some neato articles to get your week going.

Modal Kombat Has Begun (via Destructoid): If there’s anything cool about group projects in college, it’s the occasional quirky one that is designed to integrate cool stuff with the assignment. Two guys have created a way to play Mortal Kombat with electric guitars, and while no one is going to be doing fatalities anytime soon, it’s still a cool way to blend audio and visual arts.

Palin-Autographed 360 Back On EBay (via Gamepolitics): Sure, she may have made some infamous verbal faux pas during her run with Senator John McCain for the 2008 elections, but Sarah Palin is still worth something. That’s why an autographed 360 signed by the former Alaskan governor is set at a cool $1.1 million dollars. If you don’t think someone will pay that, then all you need to do is look at the election results to see that there might just be someone crazy enough to get it for the novelty.

Hideo Kojima Has Real Guns (via Kotaku): …and we’re not talking about the fact that he might have a real version of Solid Snake’s silenced pistol, either. No, we’re talking about the organic version of guns, the muscles. Apparently, Hideo’s been pumping the iron, meaning that if you ever get into any kind of confrontation with him, he just might use that famous CQC on you. Headband and mullet optional.

Oh, and speaking of other interesting stuff on Kotaku, one of their readers, PShip, sent this little tidbit in from an NFL game:

Good to know geeks exist even in football.

Have a good week, people!

Case Of The Mondays Cure – Fiber Optics, Street Fighters, and Remote Beetles

Lolcat or Cat Macro with white cat on laptop c...

Leaves are falling off of trees, the weather’s getting cooler, but here at Overly Positive we just soldier on. It’s always 82 degrees and sunny in our minds, so let’s see what we can show you from around the Net today to help you cheer up on another dreary Monday:

Super Street Fighter IV on the way? (via Destructoid): Topher Cantler points us towards a teaser site that Capcom apparently has set up that, of course, doesn’t tell us much of anything, but fuels speculation about Super Street Fighter IV title. Street Fighter IV came out earlier this year to quite a bit of fanfare and good feeling, so why not try to capitalize on that a bit more?

ESA Awards Scholarships to Student Game Developers (via GamePolitics): Wanted to make the move from armchair developer to putting your money where your mouth is? If so, there’s hope as far as the Entertainment Software Association is concerned. 30 students received scholarships to help them become the person who developers the next big hit, so even if that hit is a Hello Kitty game, there’s at least organizations willing to contribute to the furthering of gaming dev. Nice!

Intel Develops Fiber-Optic Chip, Geekgasm Incoming (via Fark): The processor arms race has always been a fun one, with new bits of technology coming out literally every few months in an effort to make your current NASA computer not the new hotness. This time around, Intel takes a leap forward by developing a fiber optic processor, which should provide transfer speeds of 10 gigabits per second. That’s a lot of internet porn!

DARPA Can Haz Cyborg Beetles (via The Escapist): So the only knowledge you may have about DARPA is the fact that there is a chief of the organization and he might be subject to being a seemingly dispensible character in a game series like Metal Gear, but they do other things too. The agency recently revealed that they funded research at UC Berkeley for remote controlling beetles by stimulating their wings with electrodes. Sounds like the formula for some advanced tech, or a really bad horror movie. Either way, still pretty cool.

And that’s that – have fun with your Monday!

Case of the Mondays Cure – Fakers, Cooldowns, and Ninja Cars

A very sad, sad panda :(
Image via Wikipedia

Do you really think I could keep doing these weekly pick-me-ups without posting a picture of a sad panda at some point? Come on now, it’s just way too easy to pass up.

The daily grind may be getting to you, the classes and homework might be torching your productivity, but not to worry – there’s still plenty to be happy about around the Internet. Check out these articles for some feel-good action:

Twitter to Put Smackdown on Fakers (via The Escapist): Twitter’s probably the fastest rising star in the social networking crew of applications, but with no real way to verify identity, it’s been plagued with a variety of fake accounts that in some cases have resulted in unpleasant legal action. So now, Twitter’s got to act, and they’re working on a way to verify identity to prevent people that like to impersonate Kim Kardashian from cluttering up the service.

Global Cooldown on Global Warming (via Fark): That crazy stuff you might be hearing about global warming might not be in the spotlight for a while. Scientists have pulled a 180, saying that the world is instead in a global cooldown that will last a little while. Good news for anyone annoyed by terribly obsessed environment folks everywhere – at least until 2020, when warming should pick up yet again.

Video Games to be Taught as Part of Curriculum in NYC School (via Gamepolitics): Ever get caught playing your PSP or Nintendo DS in class, students? Well, things are looking up for you, because at least one New York school is trying to put games into its education. The class will integrate games such as Spore and Little Big Planet while also employing traditional board games in order to teach children about the digital experience and get them into technology early. Oh, the lure of tech is a siren’s call, so anything anyone can do to put the needle in early is fine by me.

And finally…

Blade Runner Sound to be Added to Electric Vehicles (via The Escapist): Remember that cool futuristic sound that the flying Spinner cars made in Blade Runner (and if you haven’t seen the movie, I’m now aghast)? Well, to alleviate safety concerns that hybrid vehicles make less noise due to engine turn-offs, Nissan is integrating the sweet-sounding Spinner call into its design. I drive a Prius, and while I do delight in its ninja-like capacity for silence, I definitely wouldn’t mind having sound as long as it’s cool. Blade Runner counts as cool.

So there you go, folks – have fun with your Monday!

Case of the Mondays Cure – Baby Back Grills, Robots, and Tricia Helfer

Sad Old Woman
Image by Hamed Saber via Flickr

Another week, another downer of a Monday. But not to worry – we’ve got happy things in store for everyone as usual:

Sears Reverses Grill Listing Modification, Only Cannibals Depressed (via Digg, through The Register): With a grill, you can pretty cook any type of meat, right? Well, someone visiting the Sears.com website took it just a little bit further than that by modifying a listing to say one of the grills was good for cooking humans, babies in particular. Sears has since fixed the listing, leading to another great lesson in proper website security.

One Step Closer to A Future Ruled by Machines With Chungbot (via MSN): Seems that every day we’re seeing more and more advancements in robotic technology, assuring us that we all get a chance to play John Connor in the future. The latest appears to be a robot controlled remotely by a doctor who uses the built in cameras and speakers to observe and make recommendations to patients from miles away. Now waiting for the inevitable turn against its human masters.

Tricia Helfer to voice Zerg Queen Kerrigan in Starcraft II (via Destructoid): Those of you who are still probably drying your eyes over the loss of Starcraft character and overall evil queen Kerrigan can proceed to be consoled. Tricia Helfer, best known for roles in Battlestar Galactica and Burn Notice, is bringing her unique talents to bear on the upcoming Blizzard title. Oh, and she’s providing her voice, too.

(NSFW) You Know Your Twilight Merchandise Has Leveled Up When…(via Facebook, through The Onion): This is terribly not safe for work, but I couldn’t resist linking it anyway. I won’t ruin the wonderful surprise for those of you who can actually follow the link, but I do have to admit – when you can sell one of these, you’ve got a hit on your hands. Just the fact that it got past the pitch and the copyright holders is enough for me. There’s hope for vampire lovers everywhere.

That would be that folks. Now get your asses into that Monday happier, healthier, and hopefully not disturbed.

Case of the Mondays Cure – Heroes, Comics, and a Goldfish

sleepy sunday@Movie clip

Another Monday, another depressed pet picture. But that’s perfectly fine – it’s why we’re here with some positively perky goodness, just for you. Here’s some great news from around the geek web:

Champions Online Goes Gold, Will Release On September 1st As Planned (via Massively): The superhero-based MMO has got a lot to be proud of – its open beta starts today, it has gone gold for retail release, and even better, it’s coming out on its original release date of September 1st after all. Be sure to pre-order or go through Fileplanet for your open beta key!

Over One Hundred Thousand Support LAN Play in Starcraft 2 (via The Escapist): Sure, most internet petitions die in a fire, but every so often one of them actually catches fire in a show of online support. The Starcraft 2 petition to put LAN play back into the game is one such endeavor, reaching over 100,000 signatures as of this writing. That’s a bit tough to dismiss as simply monkeys hitting refresh and signing over and over again. Not bad, internet.

Miyazaki’s Latest Endeavor Opens at #8 In The US (via Anime News Network): While anime has enjoyed an encroachment into popular culture, emerging from a niche it occupied not 6 years ago, rarely are there any metrics to prove this. Look no further than Hayao Miyazaki’s “Ponyo”, which opened at number eight in the box office this weekend. That’s not bad at all, considering the film has little to no marketing and is about a boy and his unusual goldfish friend. Way to go, Miyazaki! Now if you could only stop hating appearances in US conventions…

Wildstorm to Publish Modern Warfare 2 Comic (via Destructoid): Call of Duty and Modern Warfare have enjoyed pretty damn good success. How do you know you have one on your hands? Branch out into other media, of course. Wildstorm has apparently picked up the rights to ink out a Modern Warfare 2 comic book, so for those of you who are seeing yourself in that excellent slowsled scene from the demo at E3, this is just another way to get into the game.

And that would be that for this Monday. Summer is bleeding away, but there’s still hope out there, always.

Case of the Mondays Cure – Betas, Grants, and Pwnage

Jasper With His Pouting Lip.

Are you just not feeling it this Monday morning? A bit depressed since the latter half of the summer is getting shorter and shorter? Well, have no fear, Overly Positive is here with some articles to brighten that dull first day of the week for you:

OnLive Beta Still Slated to Come This Summer (via Destructoid): OnLive, the service that promises to deliver game content streaming to your PC at blazingly fast speeds, has been quiet for a while, but don’t worry – the beta is still going to be coming, according to a rep. Sure, the technology may be pushed back due to no clear date, but if that happens, it wouldn’t be too far out of line with game releases these days.

Civilization Comes to the iPhone (via Kotaku): No, I don’t mean all you trendy iPhone users are barbarians suddenly learning how to use a knife and a fork, I mean that one of PC gaming’s best classics has made it to the small screen. 2k Released Civilization: Revolution for the iPhone this weekend, and even at lower resolution and graphical quality, it’s still the Civ we know and love.

Indie Game Projects Receive Canadian Grant Money (via GamePolitics, through GamaSutra): Some hope out there for all you struggling game developers out there who are just trying to get noticed – the Canadian government has given grant money out for a couple of independent developers out there – over $500,000 in some cases. Hey – it could happen to you if it’s worthwhile!

Pure Pwnage to Bring Mad Micro to Broadcast TV (via The Escapist): The Pure Pwnage web series of episodes, which follow the (mis)adventures of a hardcore gamer named Jeremy in mockumentary style, is coming to Canadian TV (boy, Canada is getting everything today). The cast, which hasn’t released an episode in nearly a year, is extremely excited about the opportunity and frankly, so am I. Here’s to seeing more “Boom! Headshot” quotes from FPD Doug in the near future.

And that would be that folks. Enjoy that Monday, and stay frosty.
